For Mikhail Kalashnikov

by Kyle Jessen

about

Kyle Jessen's "For Mikhail Kalashnikov" is the second solo release by the self-taught reed player on Gertrude Tapes. His first outing, 2021's "Make the Right Man Bleed", was likened in a review by Byron Coley at The Wire to avant-garde saxophone greats (such as Anthony Braxton and Roscoe Mitchell), while also having hints of the European Free Jazz/Free Improv sound. It is safe to say that "For Mikhail Kalashnikov" builds on that sound, by not also managing to be more brutal, but also more tender than its predecessor.
